Dulcie's painting depicts the different stages of growth for the bush banana, or Yuparli. It grows in rock crevices close to the dry river beds in the spinifex country. It is collected by the Aboriginal women to be eaten as fruit or used for medicinal purposes. Since the bush banana has both nutritional and healing properties it is of immense importance to the Aboriginal people of Central Australia.

There are two species, the Kampurarpa and Ngaru and both are extremely important desert staples. They are gathered both fresh and dry. Ngaru is simply picked ripe from the bush, but the Kampurarpa bush is shaken until the fruit drops on to the ground.
They can be made into round balls of fruit. The skins are also dried in the sun and stored on strings to be eaten when fruits are out of season.
