Deidre Brown Napangardi

Deidre was born at Yuendumu in 1961, and started painting in 1978.  Her tribe is Warlpiri.   The dreamings that deidre paints have been handed down to her from her Grandfather, Uncle and Father.  She paints the fruits that she remembers picking with her family when they went out looking for food.  Deidre is a respected and talented artist who comes from a long family line of artists.  She has exhibited widely and is sought after by collectors worldwide.

When ripe the fruit looks like small green tomatoes.   

There are two species, the Kampurarpa and Ngaru and both are extremely important desert  staples.  They are gathered both fresh and dry.  Ngaru is simply picked ripe from the bush, but the Kampurarpa bush is shaken until the fruit drops on to the ground.

They can be made into round balls of fruit. The skins are also dried in the sun and stored on strings to be eaten when fruits are out of season.
